Learn how you can set your work to repeat to automate work creation

You can automate work creation in Financial Cents by setting your projects to recur . This ensures that you hit your deadlines and nothing slips through the cracks. To see how this works watch the video below:

One great example is monthly bookkeeping. If you have a monthly bookkeeping project that recurs each month, we automatically recreate the project for you so you don't have to. This will save you time and you'll never forget about work again!

A recurring project recurs in Financial Cents when one of two things happens:

  • A project is marked completed/closed

  • If the project becomes overdue

When a project recurs it will create a new copy of the work for the next period. For example, you have a monthly bookkeeping project for January. When the January bookkeeping project recurs, Financial Cents will create an entirely new monthly bookkeeping project for February.

*** If you make any changes or edits to a recurring project, the changes will follow over to the next recurrence.

There are two types of recurring projects in Financial Cents.

  • Default recurrences

  • Custom recurrences

Default Recurrences

Default recurrences are the most commonly used recurring schedule in Financial Cents.

***A default recurring project recurs when it is market completed/closed or becomes overdue. It takes 30 minutes for the default recurring project to recur once it is triggered.

For example, you can set projects to recur:

  • Daily

  • Weekly

  • Monthly

  • Quarterly

  • Annually

If you are looking for more complex recurrences or would like to see your recurring project up to 3 months in advance for capacity planning you can use custom recurrences.

Custom Recurrences

These offer more flexible options for work that may be on complex schedules.

*** It takes 12 hours for custom recurrences to recur and show up on your workflow dashboard.

For example, you could set projects to recur:

  • Semi-monthly

  • On the last day of the month

  • On the first Friday of the month

  • Every week on Wednesday and Friday

  • And so much more!

To create a custom recurrence, you will need to select the Custom option in the Recurring field while creating the project. You will choose how often you want the project to repeat (daily, weekly, monthly, yearly) and then choose the specifics for each option. Below are some of the options for custom monthly recurring projects.

The date(s) or day(s) that you select will be the future projects' actual due date. After you select the due date, you can choose how far in advance you would like the projects to recur/create. You can set custom recurring projects to recur up to 90 days in advance.

For example, if you select the project to recur on the first Friday of every month. Then the due date of the projects will be the first Friday of every month and then you can select how far in advance you would like them to recur. If you choose 30 days they will appear on your task list 30 days in advance.

Once finished, you will see a description that explains how the project is set to recur.

Example: Recur semi-monthly for payroll

Let's say your semi-monthly payroll period is the 1st and 15th of every month. Then you would set up the project as shown below.

The first thing we do is choose the due date of the project. I chose April 1st because as I create this project it is March 17th and my next/first payroll period would technically be April 1st since the 15th has already passed.

Then you will need to select the dates you want it to recur on - the 1st and the 15th.

Lastly, you will want to decide how far in advance you want the project to appear on your to-do list. I chose 30 days in advance so I have plenty of visibility into upcoming work.


  1. If I assign someone to a recurring project, how do I make sure that gets pulled through to the other projects in the future?

    As long as you create an assignee when you create the project, that assignee will recur with the project. If you want to add an assignee to recur with the project after the project is created, simply go into the most recent recurrence > select Actions > select edit > add assignees.

  2. Can task due dates recur with the project?

The tasks due dates in the project will recur with the project. So for example, if the due date of a task is the 15th then that task will always have a due date of the 15th in the future recurrences. However, you cannot have the task due date recur differently from the project.
