Connect your AI assistant to Financial Cents so you can ask about your firm's work and act on the answers. Financial Cents MCP (Model Context Protocol) gives supported assistants access to your Financial Cents data using your own account permissions.
Use it to:
Find the work that needs attention: Ask about overdue projects or tasks assigned to a teammate.
Get client context: Look up clients, projects, invoices and payments from your conversation.
Handle routine updates: Ask your assistant to create a team task, update project details or log time.
ℹ️ Heads up! Financial Cents MCP is included on the Scale plan. Your AI assistant may have its own plan or administrator requirements.
Connect your assistant
Connect Financial Cents to ChatGPT
Use ChatGPT on the web. Your account and workspace must allow custom MCP connections. If Add custom MCP server is missing, ask your workspace administrator about access.
Open Plugins in ChatGPT.
Select + (or Add), then Add custom MCP server.
Enter Financial Cents as the name.
Under Connection, paste the Financial Cents server URL:
https://app.financial-cents.com/mcp. Use the URL ending in/mcp, not the setup guide ending in/mcp-guide.Use OAuth authentication. Financial Cents uses its own sign-in screen; you do not need an API key.
Review the warning, select I understand and want to continue, then select Create as a plugin.
Complete the Financial Cents sign-in and authorization described below when prompted. Review the discovered tools and install the resulting plugin if prompted.
Start a new conversation. Type @ and select Financial Cents, then try the connection-check prompt below.
The current Plugins flow does not require Developer Mode first. If you see the older Apps > Create interface, use the ChatGPT custom connection instructions for that interface.
Connect Financial Cents to Claude
Use Claude on the web or desktop. If your organization already added Financial Cents, find it under Customize > Connectors, select Connect, and complete the Financial Cents authorization below.
To add it yourself:
Open Customize > Connectors.
Select Add, then Custom > Web. Some accounts show + Add > Add custom connector instead.
Name the connector Financial Cents and enter
https://app.financial-cents.com/mcpas its remote server URL.Select Continue if shown. Review the detected OAuth settings and continue.
Choose Sign in now if asked. Financial Cents supports automatic client registration: choose Register automatically if Claude asks for an OAuth client option. Leave API-key headers and custom client ID/secret fields empty.
Select Add, then Connect if prompted, and complete the Financial Cents authorization below.
In a conversation, open + > Connectors and enable Financial Cents. Try the connection-check prompt below.
For Claude Team and Enterprise, an owner or another role authorized to manage connectors must first add the connector through Organization settings > Connectors. Then each teammate connects with their own Financial Cents login. See Claude's organization setup instructions for role requirements.
Authorize Financial Cents for either assistant
Sign in on the Financial Cents page opened by your assistant.
If you belong to more than 1 firm, select the firm this connection should use.
Review the requested access and select Authorize.
Return to your assistant and finish any remaining Connect or installation prompt.
Each teammate uses their own Financial Cents login. The connection follows that person's permissions and stays tied to the selected firm. Switching firms inside Financial Cents does not change the assistant's connection.
For other assistants, use the Financial Cents MCP setup guide. The server address is the same; each assistant has its own connection controls.
Try your first request
Start with a small request to confirm that your assistant is using the right Financial Cents account:
Use Financial Cents to tell me which firm and user I am connected as. Then show the number of open projects assigned to me. List snoozed projects separately. Do not change any records.
Check that the firm, user, and scope match what you intended. “Assigned to me” and “all projects I can access” can return different results.
Give your assistant reusable instructions
Paste this at the beginning of your Financial Cents conversation, or save it with your reusable instructions:
Use my connected Financial Cents account. Resolve “me” to my signed-in Financial Cents user and use that user's timezone for dates. Tell me the date range and whose work you are checking. Use current Financial Cents records, distinguish facts from recommendations, and flag missing or inaccessible data. Use full-result totals or retrieve all relevant pages before reporting totals; tell me if results are incomplete. Include record links when returned, otherwise include names and IDs. Use the Financial Cents connector for Financial Cents actions. If it cannot perform a step, explain the limitation rather than switching to browser automation. Before changing records, show me the proposed changes and wait for my approval. After approved changes, read the records back and report what succeeded and what still needs attention.
Your assistant can only use the Financial Cents tools available in your connection and the records your account can access.
Copy a starter prompt
Replace each [placeholder] with your details. Start with the first 3 prompts for a quick daily plan, team review or client briefing. The later prompts cover onboarding and routine updates. Prompts that change records ask for a preview and your approval first.
1. What should I work on today?
For individual contributors. A focused daily work list.
Review my pending team tasks and open projects in Financial Cents. Separate overdue work, work due today, and work due in the next seven days. Include tasks assigned directly to me even when the project has different assignees. Show client, project, task, due date, and why it needs attention. Recommend my top five priorities using due dates and available task information. List snoozed work separately and flag undated tasks. Do not change anything.
Next prompt: “I have [three] hours today. Help me choose a realistic plan. Ask for effort estimates where Financial Cents does not provide them.”
2. What needs our team's attention this week?
For team leads. A weekly review agenda.
Review pending team tasks and open projects assigned to [team member names] for this calendar week, Monday through Sunday, plus any earlier overdue work. Group by teammate and show overdue tasks, tasks due this week, and projects at risk of missing their due dates based on incomplete work. Distinguish observed issues from inferred risks. Identify unassigned work separately across the records I can access. Do not double-count shared work in team totals. End with five items for our team meeting. Do not change anything.
3. Catch me up on a client
For anyone preparing for a client conversation.
Prepare a briefing for [client name] using Financial Cents. Include open projects, upcoming deadlines, pending client requests, and relevant recent client-chat messages from the last 30 days that I can access. Identify questions that appear unresolved, citing the dated messages behind them. Separate confirmed blockers from possible blockers. End with a short meeting agenda. State which sources you could and could not read. If the connector returns only part of a chat history, identify that gap and do not describe the briefing as a complete 30-day review. Do not send messages or change anything.
Review your team's work
4. Prepare for a one-on-one
Help me prepare for my one-on-one with [teammate] using their Financial Cents work. Review tasks completed in the last 14 days, current overdue work, and tasks due in the next seven days. Highlight specific wins, work that may need support, and three coaching questions. Include the underlying task and project references. Do not infer performance or effort from task counts alone, and do not invent reasons for delays. Do not change anything.
5. Review workload before moving work
Compare the next two weeks of Financial Cents work for [team member names]. Show pending tasks, open projects, due dates, and available project hour budgets. Show recent logged hours separately from future workload. Flag shared assignments so totals are not misleading. Ask me for working hours, planned leave, and remaining-effort estimates before calling anyone over or under capacity. Suggest work we could discuss reassigning, with reasons. Do not change assignments.
6. Remove an unnecessary project assignment
Review open Financial Cents projects for [client or exact project list] where [person] is assigned. Show each project's current assignees and the proposed assignees after removing only that person. Preserve everyone else. Flag and skip projects that would have no assignee; this update cannot clear the full assignment list. Do not change task assignments, reviewers, or client access. Wait for my approval of the project list before making changes, then read each project back to verify the result.
This changes project assignments. Adding a person to a client's assignees list is a separate capability.
Set up new clients
7. Create a client from information already in this conversation
Use the client details below to prepare a new Financial Cents client: [paste business name, Individual or Business, primary contact, email, and any other known contact details]. First search Financial Cents for possible duplicates, including archived clients. Show possible matches and a preview of the client and contacts you would create. Ask me only for missing required information. Wait for approval before creating anything, then verify the new record. If I also ask for client access assignments, report whether the connector supports that separately.
8. Set up an onboarding project from a template
Set up an onboarding project for [existing client] using the Financial Cents template [template name]. First find the client and template and check for an existing matching onboarding project. Show the project title, proposed start and due dates, team assignees, reviewers, and template tasks. Ask me to resolve ambiguous matches or missing details. Wait for approval before creating it. After creation, verify the actual tasks, dates, and assignments and list anything requiring manual attention.
9. Turn meeting notes into follow-up tasks
Read these meeting notes: [paste notes]. Find the existing Financial Cents project [project name] for [client]. Draft specific team tasks with proposed assignees, due dates, and short descriptions. Separate agreed commitments from your suggestions, flag missing owners or dates, and check for similar existing tasks. Show me the proposed tasks and target team-task section. After I approve them, create only those tasks and verify them. Do not post the meeting notes to client chat or create client requests.
Pasting the notes makes this prompt usable without a second connector. Reading Fathom or another meeting tool directly requires a separate connection and access.
Keep your records current
10. Find projects that may be ready to close
Find open Financial Cents projects for [me / named team / client] whose team tasks are all complete. Separately show any unfinished client tasks and any available review information. Flag projects with no team tasks instead of treating them as complete. Give me a list to review in Financial Cents and explain any missing information that prevents confirming readiness. Do not close projects or treat completed tasks as proof that the project is ready to close.
The tools reviewed do not expose a direct close-project action. Completing all team tasks can still trigger Financial Cents automatic closure when the firm setting is enabled and no project reviewers are assigned. Use this prompt as a review list; do not complete tasks merely to force closure.
11. Complete specific team tasks
In [client and project], I have finished these team tasks: [task names or IDs]. Find the exact matches, show their current status, and check available dependencies. Ask about ambiguous matches. Before I approve the list, tell me whether this would complete all team tasks on the project and explain that normal completion automations may run, including automatic project closure where configured. Do not assume the project will remain open. After I approve, mark those tasks complete and verify both their status and the project status. Report any dependency or section restriction that prevents completion.
This applies to supported team-task sections. Client requests and Month End Close sections are separate resources.
12. Log my time
Prepare a Financial Cents time entry for me: [date], [duration], [client and project], [task if applicable], [billable or non-billable], [work description]. Resolve the correct records and check for a possible duplicate entry. Show the proposed entry and ask for missing required details. Use the configured billing rate rather than inventing one. After I approve, save it and verify the date, duration, project, and billing type.
Explore once the basics are working
Review client economics
For [date range], summarize Financial Cents logged hours by client, including billable and non-billable hours. Where my permissions and data allow, show recorded labor cost and billable value. If invoice data is available, report it separately with its date basis. Explain what is missing before calculating profitability, and distinguish estimated time-based margin from actual revenue less cost. Do not assume missing rates or missing time are zero cost.
This is most useful after time tracking and billing data are consistently maintained. It is not a complete profit-and-loss report.
Add Financial Cents work to an existing daily plan
Here is my current plan: [paste priorities, meetings, and admin work]. Review my Financial Cents tasks due today and overdue tasks. Merge them into one suggested plan, preserve my existing commitments, identify conflicts, and explain what you would defer. Ask me for estimates when needed. Do not edit Financial Cents records or my calendar.
Repeat a report
First run the daily or weekly prompt manually and check the result. Recurrence depends on the AI assistant's scheduling features and its ability to access the Financial Cents connection during a scheduled run. A saved prompt alone does not create a schedule.
Manage the connected account
Each connection is tied to the firm you selected when you authorized it. Switching firms in Financial Cents does not switch the connection. Results and actions are limited by your permissions in that firm, so different teammates may receive different results.
To end a connection:
In Financial Cents, go to Settings > API Settings.
Open Tokens, then FC MCP.
Find the connected assistant and select its trash icon, Revoke this client's access.
Confirm the deletion. That connection can no longer access Financial Cents.
To connect a different firm, reconnect and select the correct account during authorization. If you cannot revoke a connection, ask your firm administrator or Financial Cents support for help.
If the connection is not working
No tools appear: Make sure Financial Cents is enabled for that conversation in your assistant.
Results are missing: Confirm the connected firm and your permissions for the records you are requesting.
You cannot add the connection: Check your assistant's plan and administrator requirements in the connection troubleshooting guide.
